Baking Soda is Amazing!
I believe a negative effect of the lemonade drink is cavities.
The organic maple syrup, although good for you, is still sweet, and has an effect on the teeth - like sugar.
The lemon juice, over a long period of time, can actually erode and break down the protective enamel on your teeth...
So, it is very important while on the lemonade cleanse, to brush your teeth regulary. My issue with this is - the minty flavor of the toothpaste interferes with the lemony flavor of the lemonade!! Even after a couple of hours that fresh minty flavor makes the lemon drink GROSS! And yes I have tried the lemon flavored toothpaste... it's still kind of minty.
So, I have recently started brushing with baking soda during the day. I still use regular toothpaste in the evenings before bed, because it contains flouride, which is good for my teeth. But baking soda is some pretty amazing stuff, and it cleans your teeth WITHOUT ruining the lemon drink flavor.
If you're trying the lemon cleanse, and minty toothpaste is an issue for you, all you need to do - according to the ARM & HAMMER® website - is...
"Use ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to help keep teeth clean and white! Sprinkle some ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda into your palm, dip in your damp brush, and clean those pearly whites."
P.S. After trying the baking soda (ick!!), I decided to just use a smaller amount of toothpaste... just enough to graze the top of the brush. That amount cleans my mouth AND the minty flavor is usually gone by the time I am ready for a new lemon drink.
